DAISY Foundation Award
The DAISY Foundation was established in 2000 by the Barnes family in memory of their son, J. Patrick Barnes who died from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33.
It is dedicated to funding research to help fight diseases of the immune system and supporting ITP patients and their families.
Having been touched by the remarkable care, Clinical skills, and compassion demonstrated by nurses during Patrick's illness, the Barnes family made it their mission to recognize exceptional nurses around the country.
DAISY Award Recognition Program at Stanford Health Care
An initiative by Nursing Excellence and Center for Education and Professional Development (CEPD), in collaboration with our SLC Magnet Professional Growth and Development Council, Stanford Health Care partnered with the DAISY Foundation™ and the Watson Caring Science Institute (WCSI) to pioneer the integration of Caring Science into the DAISY Award® program.
This integration launched during the February 2024 SLC underscores the importance of scientific and philosophical approaches in defining compassionate care through nursing's micro and macro practices of the Caritas Processes.
Watson's Caring Science theory emphasizes human-centered care, highlighting the unity of mind, body, and spirit. Central to this theory are the Caritas Processes, which embody deliberate acts of compassion towards oneself and others, fostering transpersonal relationships.
These Caritas Processes include fostering authentic presence, exemplifying loving kindness, and upholding each person's innate uniqueness, individuality, and dignity.
By incorporating the Caritas Processes into the Stanford Health Care DAISY Recognition Program, the institution fosters an environment where human connection, compassion, and holistic care take precedence.
This integration enhances patient outcomes and promotes staff well-being.
