About this Condition: Bladder Cancer
Risk factors for Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancers are more common in men and in older patients.
Risk factors include:
- Age: The longer we live, the greater the likelihood of developing bladder cancer.
- Gender: Bladder cancer is more common in men.
- Smoking: The most modifiable risk of bladder cancer is smoking. People with bladder cancer commonly have histories of heavy tobacco use.
- Exposure to Petrochemicals: People who have been consistently exposed to petrochemicals including certain fuels, pesticides, fertilizers, and plastics manufacturing have a greater risk of developing bladder cancer.
- Prior radiation therapy to the pelvis: People who have had prior radiation treatment in the pelvis -- for cancers like lymphoma, gynecologic, or bladder cancers – have a greater risk of developing bladder cancer.
