LOCALIZED PROSTATE CANCER
METASTATIC PROSTATE CANCER
Getting the right diagnosis is one of the most important steps in ensuring that you receive the most appropriate care. Our team consists of leading radiologists (doctors who specialize in diagnosing disease with imaging technology) and pathologists (specialists who analyze tissue samples) who focus solely on prostate cancer.
Our doctors will provide you with personalized medical and surgical treatment options based on the most recent clinical and research advances. At weekly Tumor Board meetings, experts from multiple disciplines review cases that require more complex recommendations.
During treatment, we carefully monitor how effective your treatment is and how well you are adjusting to it. We also offer comprehensive support services and therapies to help reduce your stress and increase your comfort. Learn about our wellness resources »
Surgical Therapy
Our doctors and researchers have been at the forefront of developing new cancer treatments for years, providing you with access to the most successful and groundbreaking therapies.
- Prostatectomy: A radical prostatectomy (removal of the prostate), can be performed through open surgery as well as laparoscopic and robotic-assisted laparoscopic approaches. Our surgical oncologists perform hundreds of radical and robotic prostate surgeries annually, offering a distinct advantage over smaller programs.
- Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): We place a small tool through the urethra at the tip of the penis to access the prostate. Then, we remove part of the prostate gland that surrounds the urethra. There is no incision with this method. TURP is used as a palliative procedure (to relieve symptoms), not as a procedure to cure the cancer.
Radiation Therapy
We use the most advanced radiation therapy techniques to target prostate cancer while protecting the nearby healthy tissue from exposure. Our doctors apply high-energy radiation treatments such as IMRT, SBRT (including CyberKnife), and HDR brachytherapy, to kill or shrink cancer cells, tumors, and non-cancerous diseases. Learn more about radiation therapy.
Focal Therapy
- Cryosurgery: During cryosurgery, we kill the cancer by freezing the cells. A small, metal tool is placed in the tumor to apply extremely cold temperatures to the cancer cells.
- HIFU: Stanford Health Care is one of the few hospitals on the West Coast that offers non-invasive, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).
HIFU is a promising new therapy that uses sounds waves to image and ablate tumors while preserving the important nerves, blood vessels, and muscles surrounding the prostate that are critical for sexual function and urinary continence.
Treatment & Wellness Care
If you are battling prostate cancer recurrence or metastasis, we offer leading expertise as well as advanced diagnostic options to deliver the optimal care you need.
Our doctors will apply the latest knowledge and their expert clinical judgement to your particular circumstances. We aim to maximize your treatment success and limit side effects of therapy.
Through our extensive clinical trials portfolio, you may be able to receive promising new treatment approaches before they are widely available.
Personalizing Your Cancer Treatment
Our Tumor Genomics Program can identify the genetic fingerprint of many types of cancers and help identify targeted, cancer-fighting drugs that may be right for you.
Hormone therapy
Supplemental hormones can prevent or stop the growth or spread of tumors. The type of hormone therapy you receive depends upon many factors, such as the type and size of the tumor, your age, and the presence of hormone receptors on the tumor. Learn more about hormone therapy.
Chemotherapy
Unlike treatments such as surgery or radiation, chemotherapy shrinks and destroys cancerous cells throughout the body. We turn to these anti-cancer drugs after careful consideration, using protocols backed by extensive research and safety testing. Learn more about chemotherapy.
Angiogenesis Inhibitors
Angiogenesis occurs when the body forms new blood vessels, providing cells with oxygen and nutrients, which is a normal process that helps with growth and healing. It can, however, play a negative role in metastatic cancer, by helping tumors to grow and spread. Angiogenesis inhibitors slow this growth and may prevent metastasis. Learn more about angiogenesis inhibitors.
