Blepharitis Causes
Blepharitis Causes
Eye doctors do not always know why blepharitis develops, but it seems to occur more frequently in people with oily skin, dandruff and problems with dry eyes.
Possible blepharitis causes that have been identified include:
- Infection from excess amounts of bacteria at the base of the eyelashes
- Developing dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) on the eyelids
- Skin redness called acne rosacea
- Tiny organisms (mites) in the eyelash follicles
- Viral infection
- Allergic reaction to cosmetics or medications
- Meibomianitis — a problem with the tiny meibomian oil glands inside the eyelid
