How We Can Help You
The doctors in the Stanford Health Care Dermatologic Surgery program not only have the expertise to help improve the health and appearance of your skin, they are leading the development of new technologies and techniques not yet available at other centers.
What We Offer You for Scars
- Fellowship-trained specialists who are global leaders in aesthetic dermatology and dermatologic surgery – active clinical researchers who teach and lecture around the world.
- Advanced treatment options including laser treatments, precision surgical expertise, and innovative solutions for pigmented skin.
- A comfortable center that is easily accessible from Highway 101.
Treatment for Scars
Scars often prove challenging to treat, which is why choosing the right doctor is so important. While scars never completely disappear, we can significantly reduce their size and improve your appearance. The exact treatment depends on your scar. The doctors in the Stanford Health Care Dermatologic Surgery program provide a complete range of treatments for scars, including:
- Steroid injections to reduce inflammation (also for keloid and hypertrophic scars)
- Laser resurfacing to directly target the collagen in the skin's dermis layer and reduce recovery time (for keloid scars)
- Surgical removal to change the scar's shape and make it less noticeable (for keloid scars)

What Are Scars?
Types of Scars
There are several types of scars:
- Keloid: Sometimes the healing process is overly aggressive, leading to scarring that goes beyond the initial injury site. This can restrict movement and is more common among people with darker skin
- Hypertrophic: These scars are like keloids but stay at the injury site. They are red and raised, results of the body producing too much collagen
- Pitted: When supporting substances like collagen, fat, or muscle are lost, pitted scars can form. This happens with some cases of severe acne and after some injuries. Learn more about acne scars and our acne scar treatment.
