What is Uneven Skin Tone?

Causes of Uneven Skin Tone

Uneven skin color has several possible causes:

  • Skin spots: These occur from sun damage and include brown and red spots (Learn more about skin spots Go to Skin Spots)
  • Hyperpigmentation: When you're injured, the cells (melanocytes) that create pigment (melanin) may go into overdrive to repair the problem, leaving extra color in that area. One cause of discoloration is melasma, a type of brown skin spot (Learn more about skin spots Go to Skin Spots, including melasma)
  • Hypopigmentation: The body creates inflammation to help heal injuries, which may damage some melanocytes and result in lower pigment production for that section of skin.
