What Is Keyhole Surgery?

Minimally invasive keyhole surgery is a surgical technique that lets doctors access tumors and lesions (tissue damage) near the brain or spine by using an endoscope (a thin tube with a light and camera) inserted through one or more small incisions.

When compared with traditional open surgery, minimally invasive keyhole surgery is designed to reduce the risk of complications, shorten recovery times, and improve outcomes.

Potential side effects

Side effects of minimally invasive keyhole surgery are generally minimal.

Be sure to contact your care team if you have any questions about your recovery and if you experience any of the following:

  • Pain
  • Fever of more than 100.4o F (38 o C)
  • Chills
  • Redness, tenderness, or heat at the surgery site – these may be signs of infection
  • Swelling in the nose
  • Drainage from the nose
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
