Our Approach to Minimally Invasive MRI-Guided Interventional Care

Stanford Health Care’s Minimally Invasive MR Interventional Center (MIMRIC) team offers MRI-guided interventional care as a nonsurgical way to treat conditions like essential tremor or Parkinson's related tremor, bone cancer, uterine fibroids, and prostate cancer. Our highly trained radiologists work closely with neurosurgeons, oncologists, women’s health doctors, and other specialists. Using advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), many developed at Stanford Health Care, we precisely view tumors, nerves, blood vessels, and other structures in the body. This technology helps guide treatment personalized to your needs and is designed to relieve symptoms while leaving healthy tissues undamaged. Our MRI-guided procedures offer many advantages, including potentially faster recovery times.

What is Minimally Invasive MRI-Guided Interventional Care

Techniques Used in Minimally Invasive MRI-Guided Interventional Care

Our MIMRIC team is committed to providing you individualized care and minimally invasive treatment that is best suited to your condition.

As an example, our MIMRIC team uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and biopsy techniques to diagnose men with prostate cancer and then MRI-guided techniques to administer treatment. We either burn the cancer with high intensity focused ultrasound or freeze it with cryoablation, destroying the tumor and preserving surrounding healthy tissue. In the past, we may have performed surgery to remove the prostate gland or radiation therapy to the whole prostate gland to destroy a localized tumor.

This advanced approach leaves the urethra and nerves intact, maintaining urinary continence and erectile function. As a result, many patients recover very quickly and return to the care of their urologist for ongoing monitoring. The MIMRIC team at Stanford Health Care is one of the only places in the country to offer this service.

As another example, thousands of women every year undergo a hysterectomy to treat uterine fibroid tumors. Using minimally invasive MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS), we can treat many of these patients on an outpatient basis. We treat their fibroids internally with no incisions and no surgery. Our leadership in developing and testing this technique contributed to its approval by the FDA. Now, in partnership with Stanford Health Care gynecologists, we have a practice dedicated to the use of MRI-guided procedures to treat uterine fibroids.
