What Is MR Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS or MRgHIFU)?

Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a non-invasive way to treat benign and malignant tumors.

Ultrasound is a form of energy that can pass through skin, muscle, fat and other soft tissue so no incisions or inserted probes are needed. High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) pinpoints a small target and provides a therapeutic effect by raising the temperature high enough to destroy the target with no damage to surrounding tissue.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to guide and control the treatment, which is performed while you lie in an MR scanner. Guided by detailed images of your anatomy and the tumor, the physician is able to pinpoint, direct and continuously monitor the treatment.

Am I a candidate for MRgFUS?

You must explain all your medical conditions to your physician as well as symptoms that you are experiencing. Your physician will evaluate whether you are a good candidate for the MRgFUS treatment. Together, you and your physician will decide if you are a suitable candidate. Your physician will also discuss any other treatment options that are available to you.
