Our Approach to Theragnostic Care

Stanford Health Care’s Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging division offers theragnostic care, a method of diagnostic imaging that can precisely locate cancer and also use trace amounts of radiation to deliver targeted treatments. Our specially trained radiologists and multidisciplinary team of experts are committed to developing a care plan personalized to your unique needs. This kind of medicine helps to create better outcomes, shorter recovery times, and reduced levels of pain or discomfort. At Stanford Health Care, we treat a range of conditions, including thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, hyperthyroidism, neuroendocrine tumors, and more.

What is Theragnostic Care?

Types of Tests and Therapies in Theragnostic Care

Theragnostic care combines a diagnostic agent and therapeutic treatment in what is known as “theragnostic pairs” (or “paired theragnostic radiopharmaceuticals”).

Each component has a series of letters and numbers to identify it. The following is an example of how a doctor, known as a nuclear medicine specialist, organizes these pairings:

  • For thyroid cancer: Imaging I-123/treatment I-131
  • For hyperthyroidism: Imaging I-123/Treatment I-13
  • For PSMA-avid prostate cancer: Imaging piflufolastat F18 for PSMA PET (PYLARIFY®) /Treatment lutetium Lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan (Pluvicto®)
  • For metastatic prostate cancer to the bone: Imaging Tc-99m/Treatment Ra-223 (Xofigo®)
  • For neuroendocrine tumors (NETs): Imaging Ga-68 DOTA-TATE (NETSPOT®)/Treatment Lu-177 DOTATATE(Luthatera®)
  • For painful bone metastases: Radionuclide therapy (Metastron®, Quadramet®)
  • For non-Hodgkin lymphoma: Radioimmunotherapy (Zevalin®)
