What is Gender-Affirming Voice Surgery?

Overview

Voice surgery alters your vocal cords (vocal folds) to raise or lower your voice’s pitch. Transfeminine people who want a higher and more feminine voice may consider surgery to increase their voice’s pitch. Voice deepening surgeries and procedures help transmasculine people achieve a lower voice. Nonbinary people may choose treatments depending on their needs.

Vocal fold surgery usually includes vocal therapy with a speech-language pathologist before and after the surgical procedure. Vocal therapy can assist with other gender-related communication factors, such as:

  • Intonation, describing how your voice rises and falls
  • Nonverbal cues such as gestures and eye contact
  • Resonance, the tone, and fullness of your voice
  • Volume
