Please have your other care providers follow her -- especially your physical therapists from clinics that serve more complex cases like physical therapists in the pain clinic. She listens, acknowledges, recognizes, clarifies, explains, and validates. She takes steps to show that she is onboard with me being as healthy as I can. She reciprocates the same level of attentiveness I put into having comprehensive and preventable care. She does not explain away my concerns; she can admit when she does not have an answer and who would be best suited to ask that question to. She also suggests supports that I do not know to ask for and considers supports I do suggest through mutual conversation. My condition is progressive but I can still have a great life and it means that being preventative will ensure I do. This means having baselines; it means crossing out potential complications and explaining to me ways to periodically check signs of complications. Most importantly, she treats me like my condition is real; she treats me like my symptoms are real and attends to them with the level of care needed for their severity. I have spent five years to a lifetime being made to believe that what I was going through was not real, that the very evident physical symptoms could NOT cause the havoc they were having on my body because MRIs do not show them. Dr. B treats me like a patient with curable disease and she treats me like she's on my side. There is no cure but there is living as well as can be.

Dr. Bala, like the other doctors I've seen through Stanford, is clearly an expert in her area, and does not hesitate to refer to other experts for things that are outside her specialization. She believes my reporting of even vague symptoms (a challenge with some providers), and gave me the time to articulate issues that are difficult to describe. she responded quickly and compassionately to a message on myhealth. She was frank about potential effects and benefits of treatments. Even prior to starting any treatment, knowing I had a doctor who was knowledgeable and believed my symptoms eased my mental load.
