Biography
Sumaira Z. Aasi, M.D., is a Professor of Dermatology and Director of Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Aasi completed a fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology at Yale University where she was on faculty and served as Associate Chief. Dr. Aasi helped train fellows in Mohs and Micrographic Surgery for over ten years. She has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Mohs Surgery and is currently serving as President. Her clinical interests include management of high risk nonmelanoma skin cancers, Mohs histopathology, and reconstructive surgery.

I was concerned about having Mohs surgery because of both a previous surgery not at Stanford had my experiences with recent Derm clinic biopsies, which I found extremely painful and frankly rude. However, at this appointment with Dr. Asai, I found her to be an incredible physician. One of those rare people that you thank God for finding for you. She was kind and gentle explained exactly what she was going to do and when she did it, I can honestly say I felt no pain. She used a smaller needle and used bicarbonate in the local solution and although the work that she did was quite extensive, I can honestly say I had zero pain I would recommend her to anyone else, including myself to come back for further procedures.

Dermatology Clinic was easy to find from Salinas. Parking was quick. The front staff greeted my husband and me with kindness and smiles. Dr. Aasi, the Resident, the Nurses, Miguel and assistant were absolutely wonderful. I felt comfortable the moment I met each of them. Very professional but at the same time put me at ease. I was quite nervous for my scar revision surgery, as I still remember the pain from my Mohs surgery last year, but she made sure not to rush the process and made me feel extremely comfortable and at ease before starting the procedure. I really didn't feel like I was a patient. I just felt like a procedure. The doctor and staff perform the same procedure day in and day out, so for them it's just something they do. For me, this was a first time thing and I was scared. I didn't feel any compassion towards me from the staff. I felt worse emotionally after I left the appointment. Like I was the one who did something wrong because I was unsure about the procedure. I felt like my questions were answered but without concern that I had never gone through the experience before. it made me very sad that I didn't feel taken care of when I specifically chose to go to this Stanford clinic.

Decisions about this procedure were made prior to the procedure, and yes, I was informed about them and included in making them. I feel like once the procedure was decided upon there really weren't any decisions left to be made. That being said, at no time did I feel like things were forced on me without my consent. While I understand she may be very busy, I simply wanted a bit more time to help me process the information I was being provided while I was still in a state of shock. I cannot imagine having felt like I was in any better hands for this scary experience, than I felt with Dr. Assai (plus with the comforting, efficient & stellar nursing staff Profulla, Susan and Christine) I am deeply grateful to her for removing the unexpectedly large amount of skin CA from my face, while artfully minimizing the disturbing effects and assuring me that the scarring would not be as terrible as it immediately seemed. I really liked the dermatologist - she spent quality time with me and answered all my questions directly and specifically. I feel like everyone I encountered respected me as an informed patient.
Doctor seemed a bit rushed first thing in the morning. Asked questions and asked more questions over my answers. But I would not hold this against her because everything that happened after that was fantastic. She explained everything she was doing as she did it. She gave explanations of good depth and was very willing to answer any questions I may have had. I loved the fact that she explained everything I needed to know to take care of my sutures after I went home AND the best part was that I was also given these instructions in written form which were written with good depth and explanation. I referred to those instructions for 3 or 4 days, as the wound healed and changed. A couple days after the surgery I became concerned that my suture broke. I used myHealth to send a photo of what the sutures looked like and a nurse got back to me within an hour. It really helped to have access to someone from the doctors office to tell me if something was really wrong. As it turned out, everything was OK. I am so glad I didn't have to worry for hours over this needlessly. All in all, my experience was excellent and I can say with confident that I trusted this doctor and felt she had the experience to do what needed to be done. I also really like the fact that all of the doctors notes, biopsy results, diagnosis etc. are in myHealth. This is going to be so important to me in the future.

Excellent Doctor (and team), but under time pressure.
I cannot say enough about the immediate and wonderful care provided to me by Dr. Sumaira Aasi. First of all, I dropped in to see if I could get an early-morning "drop-in" appointment with someone at the clinic and Dr. Aasi was very gracious to see me before she started her appointments for the day. She was very conversational about what she saw in my healing wound and was forthcoming to explain to me everything she was thinking about the wound, how I could improve my wound care, and assured me that the wound was NOT infected, which is what prompted me to stop by the clinic in the first place. Dr. Aasi spent precious time explaining to me how to improve the care of my wound, exposing it to air to let it dry, keeping it dressed with Vaseline, and making sure that I had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Hollmig (the original surgeon) the following week. Dr. Hollmig was not in the clinic that day. Dr. Hollmig did a follow-up call later that day. I don't know what I did to deserve the VIP treatment...possibly they had me confused with someone on Trump's Transition Team...who knows...but I was receiving First Class treatment!!! I felt very cared for and it was made very clear that I was to call at any time if I felt the wound was not healing as it should or if I became concerned about infection. Dr. Aasi also noted that I had a severe athlete's foot skin condition and she prescribed Econazole cream which has since cured a chronic leprosy-like skin problem which I have had with both feet forever. As I stand right now, I have a rather extraordinary condition of Extremely Happy Feet!!!

I have only the most favorable comments about Dr. Aasi (who had operated on me a few years ago and wisely advised me on a possible cancer problem which resolved itself as she had suspected). She has amazing surgical skills, excellent communication and it shows that she obviously cares a great deal about her patients and their healthy outcomes. I think she is the best doctor I have had in my 85 years. I had initially gone to my local eye doctor for a possible stye and was delighted to discover that his surgical colleague regularly cooperates with Dr. Aasi on this kind of problem!

I have been seeing Dr Assi for a year. She performed Mohs surgery on my nose which ended up needing a graft. She was extremely capable and her manner was both caring and professional. I had a few issues around the problems listed above. i would email her through My Health and either she or one of the nurses would get back to me the same day. I was able to send them photos through my Health which was very helpful. They always responded very quickly and addressed my concerns and answered my questions. Dr Assi and her team have always consistently been the best!

I've mentioned this before: I consider myself fortunate to be in Dr. Aasi's care. She is always medical perfection personified.
Dr. Aasi and her team (Dr. Gee, resident and Christina Saucedo (Clinical Nurse) provided me with absolutely superior medical treatment and care. They all made me feel comfortable for a truly uncomfortable procedure and I felt I was under the care of very competent and extremely nice and respectful health care providers. I don't think it gets much better than this. Dr. Aasi has an especially comforting bedside manner and it is clear she is excellent at what she does. Dr. Gee's bedside mannner as a resident was also exceptional and I'm sure he will make a very fine Dermatologist or Dermatology surgeon, if that's the path he chooses. I am very grateful that I was able to receive such excellent from this amazing Stanford team!

Most important, she never makes me feel rushed or that our meeting has to be hurried along.
