Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Treatment
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: Our Approach to Care
We take a comprehensive approach to caring for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Each child's symptoms and treatment needs are unique, and we tailor our care plan to address your child's specific situation.
Because Duchenne muscular dystrophy can significantly affect the heart and lungs, we work closely with our colleagues in the Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease and pulmonary medicine to lessen the effects of the disease on these organs.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Treatment at Stanford
The Neuromuscular Program at Stanford provides comprehensive care in one location for Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients.
Treatment of DMD may include:
- Medications to relieve symptoms
- Physical therapy for muscle weakness
- Respiratory therapy for breathing issues
- Occupational therapy for swallowing difficulties
- Behavioral therapy to address cognitive function
- Diet and nutrition counseling for patients with difficulty chewing or swallowing
- Social work consultations to connect you with community resources
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Clinical Trials
Stanford investigators are participating in studies to increase their understanding of genes that may cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to investigate new treatment approaches for DMD.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
