Kidney Failure Diagnosis
Diagnosing Kidney Failure
We will begin the diagnosis by performing a physical examination and asking you about your medical history. Be sure to tell us about any symptoms you have been experiencing.
Diagnostic Procedures for Kidney Failure
Other diagnostic tests include:
- Blood tests, to determine blood cell counts, electrolyte levels and kidney function
- Urine tests
- Chest X-ray
- Bone scan
- Renal ultrasound, a noninvasive test that helps determine the size and shape of the kidney and can detect a mass, kidney stone, cyst, or other obstruction or abnormalities.
- Electrocardiogram (ecg or ekg)
- Kidney biopsy
Kidney Failure Treatment
Once we have confirmed your diagnosis, we will discuss your treatment options with you. Treatments range from medication to kidney transplantation. We will work with you to determine the optimal treatment plan. Learn more about kidney failure treatment.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.
