What Is Breast Imaging & Biopsy?
About Breast Imaging & Biopsy
We recommend routine age-appropriate and risk-appropriate screenings with mammography for breast cancer. The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present. For women at average risk, national guidelines recommend mammography every one to two years, starting at age 40 to 50.
Getting screened to identify any breast abnormalities and getting the right diagnosis is one of the most important steps in ensuring that you receive the most appropriate care. Our core imaging team consists of leading radiologists (doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating disease with imaging technology) and pathologists (specialists who analyze tissue samples) who focus solely on breast cancer. This depth of experience allows us to interpret and compare test results to provide you with a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis.
The Stanford Breast Imaging team understands the critical importance of reviewing your prior mammograms to accurately interpret any new tests that we conduct. We have technology in place to obtain, store, and compare your prior breast imaging exams, even if they were conducted elsewhere.
Our comprehensive breast imaging services include:
For Patients
For breast imaging exams completed outside of Stanford Health Care:
Your breast tissue is as unique as you are, which is why you are asked to provide prior breast imaging records to your upcoming appointments for image comparison. At Stanford Health Care, our doctors need to be able to compare your current breast imaging to past exams to determine what is “normal” for you or to view your complete records if you are seeking treatment.
