Genetic Testing, Counseling, and Evaluation for Heart Disease
Our Approach to Identifying Genetic Heart Disease
Inherited cardiovascular diseases are conditions that run in families and affect various portions of the heart, including the heart muscle, the electrical system, the blood vessels, or cholesterol and lipid levels. These genetic diseases are often rare and may go undiagnosed unless you receive care from a cardiology team that specializes in these conditions.
The Stanford Center for Inherited Cardiovascular Disease offers the comprehensive care you and your family need. Leading specialists in cardiology, genetics, and nursing offer expert interpretation of test results and can recognize subtle clues that lead to an accurate diagnosis for you and your family. They help you understand your test results and which of your relatives might also need to have their hearts checked.
What We Offer You for Heart Disease Evaluation
- Specialized expertise in each aspect of your evaluation. Our cardiologists and genetic counselors write national guidelines and contribute to leading research. Our cardiovascular genetics nursing team is the first of its kind in the world.
- Team-based approach to care, with dedicated experts working together during the same clinic visit for more thorough and informed evaluations. We pioneered this integrated model, which has inspired other programs around the globe.
- Complete examination of heart health through specialized imaging, deep analysis of medical and family histories, and genetic testing.
- Ongoing monitoring and support by team members who help you understand your heart health, make informed decisions, and adjust to new circumstances.
- Full family support, by helping you determine which other relatives might be at risk for inheriting the same condition and providing resources to help them get evaluated. Our program also partners with Stanford Children’s Hospital to care for your children.
What Is a Genetic Heart Disease Evaluation?
Overview
Inherited cardiovascular diseases, sometimes also called genetic heart diseases, are caused by differences in your genes, which are made of DNA. Genes are passed down from our parents and provide our body with instructions for the structure and function of our hearts, blood vessels, and cholesterol. Problems with these instructions can cause heart and blood vessel diseases that can run in families.
Genetic heart diseases can look similar to other, more common heart diseases, so recognizing their subtle differences is crucial. Inherited heart disease often needs earlier treatment to avoid heart failure, heart attacks, sudden cardiac arrest, and other complications. With the right evaluation and proper intervention, your risk for serious complications can be lessened.
In the course of an evaluation, our clinic team works closely together to get a detailed understanding of your condition. Our highly experienced cardiologists and advanced practice providers analyze the results of your heart imaging and other tests, while our genetic counselors provide expert interpretation of your family history, family risk, and genetic testing results.
Our evaluations involve multiple steps, each guiding the next:
Important signs to look for in your family:
- Heart attacks, especially at young ages
- Sudden unexplained deaths or accidental death, especially at young ages
- Relatives who have pacemakers or implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) at young ages
- Relatives who have had heart surgery, including a transplant
- Fainting
- Heart murmurs
- Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia)
- Heart failure
- Known heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
- Medical and family history: A cardiologist or advanced practice provider (APP) will call to ask you about your symptoms, current medications, previous heart history, and family history. With this information, the APP will determine what additional records, heart testing, and family information are needed before your first clinic visit. This preparation allows your first clinic visit to be as efficient as possible. Before the visit, we may arrange additional testing at our clinic with specialized testing and procedures to provide your team with the most accurate information about your heart.
- Imaging and other heart tests: We review your records and test results. Our cardiologists assess physical changes to your heart and its function. Their experience helps them recognize subtle signs of genetic disease.
- Genetic testing: Looking for genetic causes of heart disease can provide several types of information. Sometimes it can confirm a diagnosis or guide treatment. More frequently, it helps us know which of your family members may be at risk of developing the same heart problem. Our genetic counselors help you decide if you want genetic testing and provide expert interpretation of the results. Learn more about genetic testing.
- Family outreach: We help identify family members who should have a heart evaluation, then provide you with a letter to help you communicate our recommendations with them. The letter lays out your diagnosis, symptoms your family members should watch for, your genetic test results and their meaning, and our recommendations for family care.
