What to Expect - Total Parenteral Nutrition
What to Expect: Total Parenteral Nutrition
TPN delivers nutrients directly into your bloodstream through a central line. A central line is a long-lasting intravenous (IV) line we place directly into one of your main blood vessels. Consistent with our commitment to delivering personalized care, our nutrition experts develop a customized nutrition formula based on your individual needs.
This formula includes precise combinations of:
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Fats
- Electrolytes
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Water
You may be anxious about nourishing yourself with TPN, but we teach you everything you need to know, including:
- How to take care of your central line and the skin around it
- How to work your infusion pump
- All the supplies you need and how to get more if you run out
- Who to call if you have problems
As part of your treatment, you will also need regular lab tests. This helps us:
- Measure how well your formula is meeting your needs
- Make sure your organs are working properly
- Keep you free of infection
- Know whether your digestive tract has healed enough to start reintroducing solid food into your diet
