Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP)
MBSAQIP is a comprehensive, nationwide surgical quality program aimed at ensuring the safe and effective performance of metabolic and bariatric surgery. Surgical outcomes focus on weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related diseases, like diabetes, sleep apnea, and others. Research shows accredited centers experience lower complications, and better outcomes than that of non-accredited facilities.
Blue Distinction® Center for Bariatric Surgery
Blue Distinction® Center for Bariatric Surgery
This quality designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield signifies the BMI Center delivers high-quality bariatric care that leads to better outcomes for patients. The Blue Distinction® program evaluates facilities for clinical quality and physician expertise. We must periodically undergo re-evaluation to maintain our Blue Distinction® certification.
Optum™ Centers of Excellence
Optum™ Centers of Excellence
The Optum™ Centers of Excellence designation indicates we meet a high standard of quality in our field. Optum™ evaluated the BMI Center on several factors, including our commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to weight loss. This certification also assessed our patient outcomes in relation to the volume of bariatric surgeries we perform.
American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons
The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) is the largest society for this specialty in the world. ASMBS represents over 4000 health care professionals including surgeons, physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and dieticians from over 40 countries.
The vision of the Society is to improve public health and well being by lessening the burden of the disease of obesity and related diseases throughout the world. Founded in 1983, foremost American surgeons have formed the society’s leadership and have established an excellent organization with educational and support programs for surgeons and integrated health professionals. The purpose of the society is to advance the art and science of metabolic and bariatric surgery by continually improving the quality and safety of care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases by:
- Advancing the science of metabolic and bariatric surgery and increase public understanding of obesity.
- Fostering collaboration between health professionals on obesity and related diseases.
- Providing leadership in metabolic and bariatric surgery the multidisciplinary management of obesity.
- Advocating for health care policy that ensures patient access to prevention and treatment of obesity.
- Serving the educational needs of our members, the public and other professionals.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently accepting participants. Closed trials are not currently enrolling, but may open in the future.

PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
Bariatric surgery requirements include:
- Proof of six months supervised attempts at weight loss with documented weights
- Psychological evaluation
- Upper endoscopy
- Meet with a nutritionist before and after surgery
- Diagnostic tests completed within six months prior to surgery
Bring or mail ahead of time the results of your diagnostic tests, your completed Patient Questionnaire and Food Diary. You can also receive a copies of forms from our New Patient Coordinator at 650-736-7102.
