Treatments at the Neurogastroenterology, Motility and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Program
Our active role in research and clinical trials helps us understand motility issues at the molecular level. With this information, we can develop personalized treatments for each individual. From the latest medications to special gastroparesis diets and minimally invasive surgery, we offer the full range of available treatments.
Treatments available through the Neurogastroenterology, Motility and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders Program include:
- Biofeedback: Using a special machine and sensor probe, we help you retrain muscles along your gastrointestinal tract.
- Botulinum toxin injections: Injecting small amounts of botulinum toxin (Botox®) into the muscles of your gastrointestinal tract can help them relax and work in a more coordinated fashion. Learn more about botulinum toxin injections for gastrointestinal disorders.
- Nutrition therapy: Our nutrition experts can help you find foods that are easy to digest and will make sure you are receiving proper nutrition. Learn more about our Nutrition Services.
- Pain management: Offering innovative approaches, experts in our Gastrointestinal (GI) Pain Clinic address the source of your pain. Your treatment may include medications, stress management, or alternative therapies, such as medical acupuncture.
- Gastric electrical stimulation: Using electrodes attached to your stomach wall, a special device sends electrical pulses – which most people do not feel – to help trigger stomach contractions that move food along your gastrointestinal tract. Learn more about gastric electrical stimulation.
- Medication: We offer personalized medication plans to address all of your symptoms and other health conditions. These medications stimulate muscle contractions in your stomach, alter nerve sensation or boost levels of good bacteria.
- Celiac nerve block: This treatment works by injecting pain medication directly into the bundle of nerves that control sensation in your abdominal organs (celiac plexus). Learn more about celiac nerve block.
- Surgeries, when medically appropriate, may include:
- Esophagus treatments: We offer minimally invasive procedures to loosen up stiff muscles in your esophagus, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy and Heller myotomy.
- Gastrectomy or gastric bypass: These surgeries reduce the volume of food your stomach can handle and create a new connection (bypass) to your small intestines. Learn more about gastrectomy and gastric bypass for gastrointestinal disorders.
- Feeding tube placement: If you are on enteral nutrition therapy and are experiencing problems with your feeding tube, you may need a procedure to replace it.
- Esophagus treatments: We offer minimally invasive procedures to loosen up stiff muscles in your esophagus, such as peroral endoscopic myotomy and Heller myotomy.
