Conditions Treated
Conditions Treated with Annular Closure
Our specialists use annular closure to minimize the risk of recurrence of a herniated disc in the lower back. Stanford Medicine surgeons recommend limited discectomy with annular closure only when nonsurgical treatments aren’t successful.
Conditions that rule out the use of the annular closure device include:
- Allergies to implant materials such as titanium and plastic polymers
- Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, which is considered extreme obesity
- Diabetes which puts you at greater risk during surgery of any kind
- Infection of the disc that requires antibiotic treatment before surgery
- Neuropathy caused by nerve damage often associated with a feeling of “pins and needles”
- Osteoporosis or osteopenia bone disorders marked by weak bones and bone loss
- Spinal stenosis which has narrowed the natural spaces along the spinal canal
