Laboratory tests are at the heart of your medical care. Blood tests, urinalysis, and other diagnostic labs provide important information about your health status. When our expert pathology services evaluate samples, the results help doctors rule out or confirm illnesses and infections.
Pathology tests examine samples of fluids, cells, or tissues from your body. Pathologists are specialized doctors who review samples and test results to help your care team confirm a diagnosis or identify differences from your previous results, to spot medical problems or health changes.
We use the latest technology and techniques to perform thousands of lab tests each year. Our lab is licensed by the State of California's Department of Public Health and accredited by The Joint Commission. These licenses and accreditations mean that we adhere to the highest quality standards.

Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley performs on-site diagnostic testing for a wide range of needs and conditions. Your doctor may prescribe tests of your blood, other body fluids, or tissues to understand your medical condition. Please see your doctor before coming to a lab near you. Comprehensive Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic tests monitor health and detect disease conditions. Our testing includes:
- Blood chemistry
- Coagulation: Measurement of the blood’s ability to clot
- Hematology: Wide range of blood tests to help diagnose blood disorders, infections, and cancers such as leukemia
- Urinalysis
EKG (electrocardiogram) Testing
EKG testing records the heart’s electrical activity to help doctors diagnose problems such as heart attack, arrhythmia, and heart failure.
Fertility Testing
Fertility tests can detect ovulation and/or diagnose infertility (problems getting pregnant) or problems during pregnancy. The fertility tests listed below are available on Tuesday and Friday.

Microbiology Testing
On-site testing can identify the makeup of organisms in your body, including beneficial and harmful substances.
- Microbiology: Microscopic organisms, including viruses and bacteria
- Molecular testing: Tests for genes, proteins, or other molecules
- Mycology: Tests to detect fungal infections
- Parasitology: Study of parasites, organisms that live off a host organism
Screening Tests
Expert pathologists assess screening results to test for many conditions. We handle many lab tests in-house and send specialty testing to a high-quality reference lab for accurate results.

- Pap test, including ThinPrep, which can find signs of cervical cancer earlier than traditional Pap smears
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
- Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing

Transfusion Services
Our laboratory team tests blood products before their use in blood transfusions. We check for bacteria, viruses, or parasites to confirm blood is safe to transfuse.

Clinical Pathologists
These doctors have highly specialized training in laboratory examination of blood, urine, or tissue samples to detect or rule out disease or infection. Some pathologists specialize in studying cells (cytopathologists). Others have expertise in blood disorders (hematopathologists). Pathologists work closely with your other doctors to recommend the best care for you.
