Patient & Family Partner Program

Stanford Health Care’s Patient & Family Partner Program (PFPP) is comprised of volunteers who advise, consult, speak, and participate in hundreds of patient experience improvement and marketing engagements each year. The goal of the PFPP is to bring the patient and family voice into design and improvement work aimed at improving patient care at Stanford. Participation in the PFPP varies regularly and can feature engagement in activities like: sitting on a council, committee, or workgroup, participating in a focus group or improvement event, speaking at trainings or conferences, featuring in marketing campaigns, sharing patient experience stories, content design/review, and general feedback/advising.

Some examples of PFPP engagement include:

  • Participating on 1 of Stanford’s 12 Patient & Family Advisory Councils (PFACs). Each PFAC provides an on ongoing forum for collaboration and partnership between patients, families, staff, and physicians in different locations, clinics, and service lines.

  • Sitting on a committee of inpatient leaders aimed at improving communication about medications prior to discharge.

  • Speaking at a patient experience bootcamp for new employees about the importance and value of having compassion.

  • Attending a meeting to select new outdoor furniture for the new Stanford Hospital.

  • Providing feedback on the ethics of using an algorithm design to identify patients who are good candidates for Palliative Care.

  • Participating in an interview about the use of technology in health management and the characteristics of Stanford’s MyHealth application.

Who is a good candidate to join the PFPP?

  • Someone who is a patient of or caregiver to a patient of Stanford Health Care (1-time, or long-term, inpatient or outpatient)

  • Someone who has good communication skills and is not looking for individual problem resolution or to generate complaints

  • Someone who can let go of personal bias and speak on behalf of a patient population at Stanford Health Care
