Our specialists are experienced with the diagnosis and treatment of all orthopaedic trauma conditions, including:
Fractures
Fractures are various types of broken bones, usually the result of high force impact or physical stress, or certain medical conditions that weaken the bones, such as osteoporosis or bone cancer. Two types of orthopaedic fractures are articular and periarticular, occurring around or adjacent to a damaged joint or cartilage.
Injuries
Hand, wrist, foot, ankle, leg, and arm injuries may be due to trauma such as a sports injury, accident, or work-related injury.
Multiple system injuries
Some orthopaedic injuries affect several parts of the body.
Post-traumatic injuries
Trauma may cause later damage to bones, joints, or muscles.
Nonunions and malunions
A break in the bone that is untreated or does not heal properly may cause bones to move out of their normal position. This can cause pain, deformity, and disability if not surgically treated.
With any orthopaedic trauma, our goals are to relieve your symptoms, repair your injury, and restore your ability to do the activities you enjoy.
Your doctor will recommend a treatment plan customized to you and based on:
- Your age, overall health, and medical history
- Extent of the disease, injury, or condition
- Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
- Expectations for the course of the disease, injury, or condition
- Your opinion or preference of treatment plans
We always emphasize the least invasive approach possible. However, if needed, our specialists also have extensive experience with all surgical procedures.
INNOVATION HIGHLIGHTS
The Stanford Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine team excels at developing innovations to advance the diagnosis and treatment of orthopaedic trauma conditions, hand and upper limb conditions, and injuries. Patients in our program may even have opportunities to participate in research studies of breakthrough treatments not yet available at any other center.
Studies currently underway are exploring discoveries such as:
- Melatonin Treatment for Sleep Disturbance in Orthopaedic Trauma Patients: The study hopes to determine if providing melatonin and sleep education effectively improves sleep following traumatic injury, and aids in recovery.
- Classification of Shoulder Ptosis after Middle Third Clavicle Fractures to Predict Functional Outcomes: We aim to find the ideal patient population that benefits from surgery for a middle third clavicle fracture, and to understand overall patient outcomes with surgery vs. the conservative approach of no surgery through 3D scanning.
- Weight-Bearing After Native and Periprosthetic Distal Femur Fractures: This study looks to uncover normal weight bearing patterns after surgical fixation of distal femur fractures, utilizing insole-type sensors to track continuous weight bearing and gait for the duration of the patient's recovery.
- Video Analysis of Gait and Range of Motion in Upper and Lower Extremity Orthopaedic Injury: The goals of this project are to determine how best to use gait and range of motion videos for improving postoperative orthopaedic trauma care, telemedicine, and physical therapy.
- Forecasting Disability After Rotational Ankle Fractures: This project aims to understand the correlations between patient mindset and postoperative function in ankle fractures.

Treatments
Whenever possible, we treat orthopaedic disorders using non-surgical approaches. Our highly experienced team works together to help determine the most effective treatment for you. The best approach may involve one or more of the following options:
At our Fracture Prevention Program, we offer a comprehensive assessment and personalized treatment plan to prevent future fractures and optimize your bone health. Your plan may include taking bone-enhancing medication, adding key nutrients to your diet, and working with occupational and physical therapists to prevent falls.
Lifestyle modification
Your doctor may recommend that you change your sports or exercise routine to help your condition heal or to prevent injury in the future.
“RICE”
Your doctor may recommend the combination of Rest, Ice (or heat therapy), Compression (with a wrap or bandage), and Exercise as just the treatment your condition needs. Or this approach might help even if other treatments are also needed.
Injuries or conditions of the hip, pelvis, and leg may need specialized splinting in conjunction with physical therapy to help reduce swelling and pain, and to restore strength, endurance, coordination, movement, and function.
Immobilization
In some cases, your doctor may recommend keeping your hip, pelvis, or leg in a fixed position using a cast, brace, or other device.
Occupational therapy
We provide occupational therapy services to help you return to work or perform other normal daily activities.
Physical therapy
Our physical therapy team helps people build strength and mobility after a hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder injury or other condition. We also help you develop a long-term exercise plan to help you enjoy the best health with the least possible risk of injury.
Surgery
We emphasize noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments whenever possible. But when needed, we also offer extensive experience in all surgical procedures. Our team has helped pioneer some of the most sophisticated surgical techniques that set world standards for quality care.
Personalized Treatments
Your care team will assess your unique needs and lifestyle to develop the best treatment plan for you. We may use a single approach or a combination to provide you with the most comprehensive and personalized care possible.
Examples include options using your body’s own defense mechanisms:
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection using your own blood’s platelets and plasma
- Stem cell therapy
- Other therapies using your own cells
Your doctor will work with you to help manage any pain and inflammation related to your condition. Pain relief measures may include:
- Acupuncture
- Medication
Risk management/prevention
Our doctors will help you understand your risk for developing a hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder condition and help you take steps to actively prevent injury. We may focus on actions including:
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials are research studies that evaluate a new medical approach, device, drug, or other treatment. As a Stanford Health Care patient, you may have access to the latest, advanced clinical trials.
Open trials refer to studies currently recruiting participants or that may recruit participants in the near future.
