Conditions We Treat
Who is Eligible?
Our team helps people who have excess weight or an obesity disorder take steps toward living healthier. Our program deliver care in a safe, comfortable, and encouraging environment to support you at every step in your care for weight loss management. We deliver routine care as well as meet the most complex and diverse medical needs for:
Obesity-related conditions
We treat all the related conditions caused by being overweight, including:
- Accelerated aging. Some studies suggest obesity makes you age faster.
- Acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). People with weight issues often experience heartburn. Weight loss can make that go away.
- Back pain. Your spine supports your entire body. Excess weight puts stress on your spine, leading to pain.
- Fertility problems. If you’re overweight and having trouble getting pregnant, bariatric surgery or a medical weight loss program may help you conceive.
- Heart disease. Fat doesn’t just live on the ‘outside’ of the body, where you can see it. Fat can clog arteries and lead to heart disease. Losing weight through bariatric surgery or a medical weight loss program can help keep your heart healthy.
- Hypertension (high blood pressure). When you’re overweight, your heart has to work harder to pump blood throughout your body. Losing weight can reduce your blood pressure.
- Joint pain. Excess weight can erode the lining of your knee and hip joints. This makes walking painful. You can preserve your joints by maintaining a healthy weight.
- Liver disease. Internal fat can accumulate in the liver and cause tissue scarring. When you lose weight, the liver often can heal itself.
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Beyond snoring, sleep apnea causes you to actually stop breathing during the night. Eventually, this lack of oxygen can damage your heart. Obesity can cause OSA, and losing weight can cure it.
- Risk of cognitive impairment. Overweight people may be more prone to developing dementia or another cognitive impairment, according to some recent research.
- Type 2 diabetes. This condition can be minimized or even reversed through weight loss.
To be a candidate for weight loss surgery, you must be over 18 years old and:
- Weigh at least 100 pounds over ideal body weight (BMI 40) or 70 to 75 pounds over ideal body weight (BMI 35) with weight-related health conditions
- Have a BMI over 30 with weight-related health conditions (for gastric band surgery only)
- Have a history of attempting to lose weight without lasting success
- Be motivated to make permanent lifestyle changes, including healthy eating and long-term physical activity

Our tailored approach to care for medical weight loss includes a health assessment, medical weight loss plan, and support services that will help you reach your goals.

- Dietary evaluation focusing on eating habits and nutrition, and an inventory of current medications
- Environmental analysis of routines, relationships, lifestyle, and other factors that may contribute to excess weight
- Evaluation of other health concerns related to obesity, such as Type 2 diabetes, acid reflux, joint pain, and cardiovascular disease

- Classes, seminars, and customized education to help you make healthy choices and take control of your well-being
- Support groups to encourage you to learn from others’ experiences, share your concerns, celebrate your victories, and stay on track
Weight Loss Surgery
In our bariatric (weight loss) surgery program, we offer surgical and nonsurgical options of care for weight loss, including bariatric surgery techniques and comprehensive support from a team of experts. Our multidisciplinary team of doctors specialize in minimally invasive laparoscopic treatments. These procedures allow for less recovery time than traditional surgery. The surgeon uses small incisions, a camera, and tiny tools for unparalleled precision. We offer:
Surgical Treatments
Gastric bypass
A surgical procedure primarily designed for obese patients to alter the process of digestion and aid in weight loss. The procedure reduces the size of the stomach and bypass part of the small intestine to restrict the amount of food consumption as well as absorption of nutrients.
Sleeve gastrectomy
A surgical weight-loss procedure in which a portion of the stomach is removed restricting food consumption.
Non-Surgical Treatments
Intragastric balloon
Health assessment
We begin with a comprehensive evaluation of your physical and emotional well-being. This approach helps us design the most effective program for your long-term benefits. We provide:
- Comprehensive health assessment, including body composition analysis and blood and urine tests to check for medical factors affecting weight
Bariatric surgery and minimally invasive techniques
We specialize in procedures that make the stomach smaller, decrease the amount of food the body absorbs, or both. Your care team will discuss these options with you. We offer:
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: Technique that reduces the stomach’s size and connects the smaller stomach directly to the small intestine
- Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve): Procedure that removes 75% to 80% of the stomach, creating a smaller stomach shaped like a banana
- Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB or LAP-BAND®): Reversible procedure that reduces stomach size with an adjustable band around the top portion of the stomach
- Intragastric balloon: Nonsurgical, temporary (six months) procedure to place a balloon into the stomach through the mouth, to help you feel full faster by taking up space in the stomach
Classes and support
You play a crucial role in a successful weight loss plan. Our compassionate experts offer education and encouragement before and after surgery. We empower you to take control of your health with:
- Pre-surgery introduction classes so you can ask questions and gather information about procedures
- Virtual Post-surgery support groups and classes to help you stay inspired and motivated as you adapt to a new lifestyle after bariatric surgery
- Regular checkups from our multispecialty team to assess your well-being and monitor health conditions
