Nutrition is an important part of life, cancer treatment, recovery, and prevention. Food is one of the few things you can be in control of during your treatment. The oncology certified registered dietitians at the Stanford Cancer Center are here to help you make informed choices about nutrition, answer your nutrition-related questions, and help you to achieve and maintain good health.
Care and Treatment
Managing Gas and Bloating During Cancer Treatment
Eat more soluble fibers that may help bulk stools:
- Bread
- Rice
- Quick Cook Oatmeal
- Tortillas
- Barley (very soft cooked)
- Rye (very soft cooked)
- Legumes (very soft cooked)
- Smooth nut butters
- Carrots (very soft cooked)
- Beets (very soft cooked)
- Green beans (very soft cooked)
- Squash (very soft cooked)
- Chopped spinach (very soft cooked)
- Avocado
- Bananas (peeled)
- Apples/applesauce (peeled)
- Pears (peeled)
- Peaches (peeled)
- Ripe melon (no seeds and peeled)
- Sweet Potatoes (peeled)
- Potatoes (peeled)
Eat more prebiotic fibers that may help promote the growth of good bacteria:
(But they may also increase gas when first consumed)
- Jerusalem artichoke (very soft cooked)
- Dandelion greens (very soft cooked)
- Garlic, leeks, onions (very soft cooked)
- Asparagus
- Banana
Limit or only take these gassy foods if well tolerated:
- Broccoli/cauliflower/cabbage
- Carbonated beverages
- Lactose-containing milk
- Chewing gum
- Cucumbers, Radishes
- Raw onions/garlic
- Beans
- Alcohol
- Raisins, prunes
- Wheat bran cereals
Consider trying probiotic-rich foods:
- Yogurt
- Kefir
- Good Belly
- Yakult
- Activia
- Kombucha Tea
- Raw miso paste

Basil Broccoi
Broccoli, cabbage, collard greens, kale, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are all cruciferous vegetables. This vegetable family contains powerful phytochemicals, including carotenoids, indoles and glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which have been studied and shown to slow the growth of many cancers.
